Cruise ship Norwegian Escape ran aground; passengers left stranded and stranded – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports

(WSVN) – Passengers’ plans were turned upside down when their cruise ship “wrecked”, turning their vacation into a nightmare.

“Instead of just, you know, dropping people off at the dock and then, ‘well, I hope the bus comes. The ship is leaving. See you later guys. I mean, that’s what’s going on,” said Laura Smith, a passenger on Norwegian Escape.

Smith’s family cruise on the Norwegian Escape turned into a nightmare.

She took video of tugs trying to pull the ship out of the ground.

When the ship ran aground in the Dominican Republic this week, she said they had no idea what was going on.

“When they call fire, it’s obviously going to cause a lot of anxiety. The emergency lights in the hallways were turned on,” Smith said.

“But they didn’t tell us to do anything,” said Norwegian Escape passenger Ashley Gaut.

Smith said passengers were stuck on the ship with nothing to do for days as crews worked to free it.

“In the middle of the night, I woke up literally rocking,” Gaut said.

Norwegian eventually flew people home in groups on charter planes to Orlando.

Smith and his family returned to the United States, but their return flight to Kansas City was canceled, leaving them stranded.

“Norwegian says, ‘oh, that’s Delta’s problem. They have to rebook you. We’re not going to do anything. We can’t help you. We’re not going to put you in a hotel. You’re stuck,’ Smith said.

With no flight available because of spring break, she’s exhausted by it all.

“I feel like the people on the ship did a really good job. I feel like Norwegian Corporate really failed epically,” Smith said.

Norwegian has promised a full refund for all passengers
