Dance floor fight breaks out on cruise ship

MANHATTAN (WPIX) – A dancefloor fight broke out Tuesday morning on a Carnival cruise ship, prompting police to meet the ship ahead of its scheduled docking in Manhattan, authorities and officials said.

Shortly before the Carnival Magic was scheduled to arrive in the New York-New Jersey area, a major fight broke out at a nightclub on the ship around 5:20 a.m., according to the NYPD. The fight started as a fight between two people on the dance floor and then escalated as more joined in, the department said.

By the time the fight was over, around 40 to 60 people had been involved, NewsNation reported.

When the ship docked at Pier 88 in Manhattan, police and EMS were waiting, authorities said. The NYPD initially described the incident as an emergency docking, but Carnival said in a statement that the shutdown was planned all along.

“Last night, as Carnival Magic returned to New York, several guests were involved in an altercation at a nightclub. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported and our onboard security team responded,” reads “The vessel arrived as scheduled this morning and law enforcement ashore have been notified and have met with the vessel to interview suspects and witnesses and conduct an investigation,” the statement said.

The Magic left the New York-New Jersey area on June 20 for a round-trip Caribbean tour, and were scheduled to return Tuesday, according to CruiseMapper.com tracking site. Passengers were gradually disembarking following the stop, police said.
