Johnny Depp honored by fans with a makeshift pirate ship outside the courthouse

Fans of the embattled actor Johnny Depp got creative in their ways to show their support outside the Fairfax, Va. courthouse, which hosted the televised libel trial. Depp is suing his ex-wife, Aquaman star Amber Heard, on an op-ed she wrote for The Washington Post in 2018 describing herself as a survivor of horrific abuse. He wants $50 million in damages, alleging the op-ed cost him his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean 6; Heard filed a countersuit for $100 million, alleging Depp defamed her.

The trial has completed all of his testimony and the jurors are currently deliberating. With that decision looming, some fans showed their support for Depp by parking what appeared to be a pirate ship outside the courthouse. In reality, the ship is a flatbed truck that’s been kitted out to look like something Jack Sparrow would take to the high seas. The footage was captured and shared on Twitter, and you can see some of them below.

The tribute comes after other fans brought real alpacas with pirate hats to the courthouse. This was due to comments Depp made about feeling betrayed by Disney firing him from his role as Captain Jack Sparrow. The firing left Depp so hurt that if, theoretically, Disney came back to him and offered him “$300 million and a million alpacas,” he still couldn’t take on the role.

“Captain Jack Sparrow was a character that I built from scratch and it’s something that I, of course, put a lot of [myself] in character and also working on those movies with those people and adding a lot of myself, a lot of my own rewriting of dialogue and scenes and jokes,” Depp said in his testimony. I didn’t quite understand how, after this long relationship and a fairly successful relationship certainly for Disney, that suddenly I was guilty until my innocence was proven.”

Depp added: “My feeling was that these characters should be able to have their own goodbye, so to speak. A franchise can only last so long and there is a way to end a franchise like this and I thought the characters deserved to have their way out, to end the franchise on a high note, I planned to keep going until it was time to quit.

Johnny Depp has fun while waiting for the verdict

One of the ways Johnny Depp let off steam while awaiting a verdict was performing on stage in the UK. The actor surprised Jeff Beck fans during Beck’s UK tour by taking the stage to perform several songs together. Depp has appeared on two Beck’s shows and could potentially appear on others in the coming days.

Regardless of the outcome of the trial, Depp appears to have found vindication in the eyes of fans and many trial watchers. There are rumors that the actor will be cast in the upcoming beetle juice movie, and while it remains to be seen if that’s true, there’s a good chance Depp will have a lot more movie roles after the verdict.
