MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) incident report showed the helmsman at the helm of the MV Filipinas Cebu had fallen asleep, causing the ship to run aground with 260 passengers.

“According to the captain of the MV Filipinas Cebu, the helmsman (the person steering the vessel) fell asleep en route causing the vessel to run aground,” the PCG said on Wednesday.

While the PCG investigation concluded that the ship’s hull had not suffered any damage, the Coast Guard advised the ship’s captain to file a maritime protest.

The Cebu-bound ship ran aground near Igbon and Agho islands in Iloilo on Tuesday.
