Port Swettenham is buzzing again with the arrival of cruise ships

GEORGE TOWN: After almost two years, Port Swettenham is bustling with activity with the arrival of over 3,000 foreign tourists.

At 8 a.m. Saturday (July 2), tourists arrived on the Royal Caribbean Spectrum of the Seas ship from Singapore to the delight of tour guides, taxi drivers and rickshaw drivers.

Rows of them waited at the harbor entrance offering travelers tour packages and transportation on their island excursion.

Datuk Tan Teik Cheng, Chairman of Penang Port Commission (PPC), Monaliza Suhaimi, Managing Director of PPC, V. Sasedharan, Managing Director of Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB), as well as representatives of Penang Global Tourism (PGT ) and heads of state agencies.

Tan said he was pleased with the arrival of the international cruise ship in Penang as it was beneficial for the tourism industry in the state and also contributed to other downstream industries.

He added that it will also enliven the atmosphere of Penang as a tourist attraction destination for local and international travelers.

“The Spectrum of the Seas call is this time the starting point for the call of other international cruise ships in the future.

“The Spectrum of the Seas ship itself will dock in Penang twice a week,” it said in a statement.

Spectrum of the Seas will depart at 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 2 to another location.
