Vylona Jessy’s birthday is January 1 and this year her husband, Captain Felino D’Souza of the Quebec Express, plans to present her with an award given to her by the Montreal Port Authority.

For more than 180 years, the Port Authority has presented a golden cane to the first ocean-going vessel of the year to reach the Port of Montreal. The Quebec Express of the Hapag-Lloyd maritime line crossed the downstream limit of the port in Sorel at 00:21

D’Souza is the son of a sailor who worked at sea for 27 years. He has been a captain for 16 years.

The Quebec Express crew spent Christmas together on their 12-day trip from Germany. There were a few storms along the way, but “no other unexpected surprises,” according to a statement from the Montreal Port Authority.

“We are proud to maintain this tradition which, more than ever, highlights the importance of seafarers and the maritime sector, a public service that never rests despite storms of all kinds”, declared Martin Imbleau, CEO of the port authority. “Although the pandemic and health regulations prevented us from celebrating Captain D’Souza’s victory in person, I offer my sincere congratulations to him and to the crew of the Quebec Express.

The container ship carries “everyday products as well as goods useful in the fight against the pandemic”. He will take care of the exports before leaving in a few days.
