Ship part

SPX right the ship with a second consecutive victory | Sports

After a rocky start to the season, the St. Pius X Panthers appear to have righted the ship, at least for now, after winning a second straight contest last week.

SPX beat La Marque 41-35 last Saturday, improving to 2-2 on the season before a final out-of-district tilt against Dallas Bishop Dunne this weekend. It was the second straight win for the Panthers after starting the season 0-2.

Running back Josh Mitchell had his best game of the season in the Panthers win, carrying the ball 40 times for 212 yards and two touchdowns, his first time finding ground this season. Quarterback Bryce McKeon completed 11 of 18 passes for 225 yards and four touchdowns without an interception. Three different receivers have caught touchdowns, with Nathan Alvarez (74 yards) carrying two of them.

Aden Allen led the Panthers’ defensive effort with eight tackles in the game, including two TFLs and his team-leading fifth sack of the season.

LEAH Schools North Academy is 0-3 this season after a 51-0 loss to KIPP Sunnyside.

The St. Thomas Eagles (3-0) had a bye last week and will look to go undefeated against Plano John Paul II this Friday.

Public school

In the only public school action of the week, the Heights Bulldogs suffered their second straight loss with a 41-15 loss to Clear Falls. The Bulldogs fell to 2-2 this season with the loss. The Bulldogs will be looking to bounce back when they face Lamar in the District 18-6A opener on Friday night.

The Booker T. Washington Eagles (3-0) were out last week and will look to extend their best start in nearly two decades when they face Kashmere on Friday night at Dyer Stadium.

Scarborough (1-2) will look to end a two-game losing streak when they face Worthing on Thursday, while Waltrip (2-1) takes on Northside on Saturday night at Delmar Stadium.
