Start-up zero44 to help shipping companies manage their CO2 emissions – Digital Ship

Flagship Founders has launched its third startup, zero44, which aims to help shipping companies, ship managers and charterers monitor and control the CO2 emissions of their fleets.

From 1 January 2023, shipping companies will have to monitor and report their carbon emissions under the IMO’s Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) scoring system, and by 2050 the industry international shipping aims to achieve zero emissions.

zero44 helps customers in their decision-making by intervening upstream in CO2 management. The start-up uses customized digital solutions to provide shipping companies with comprehensive, daily carbon reporting and offers actionable advice on future strategies.

zero44 illustrates the business impact of customer decision making, and how they can optimize processes accordingly. A range of parameters and options are analysed, including the length and route of future trips – two factors that have a huge impact on carbon emissions.

The vessel’s existing IMO rating is also used for the calculations. Some cases may show that the more economical alternative is to pay a surcharge for higher CO2 emissions – another scenario that zero44 considers as part of its recommendation process.

“The shipping industry urgently needs solutions to become more sustainable – and not in the years or decades to come, but now,” said Friederike Hesse, CEO and co-founder of zero44. “Climate change waits for no one. We need to find creative, long-term approaches to reducing carbon emissions that we can rely on immediately, regardless of a vessel’s classification, age or technology. It was the lack of complete and satisfying solutions that prompted us to found zero44 in the first place. We want to help operators make these tough decisions and work with them to shape a more sustainable and resource-friendly global maritime industry. This is the only way to prepare the sector for the future.

Fabian Feldhaus, CEO and co-founder of Flagship Founders, said, “Shipping has to be fast now and become sustainable. As founders of Flagship, we are determined to contribute to this and have had an eye on it from the start. Interviews with a range of industry players and experts only confirmed what we already knew. Over the next thirty years, the transition to zero carbon will be one of the biggest challenges this global industry has ever faced. New rules will mean that each shipping company will have to carefully consider how it handles emissions. We need to consider the business impact of future legislation and optimize planning processes accordingly. The potential in this area is enormous, we were able to validate it before creation. Our expertise in creating digital business models is the ideal solution, which is why the decision was made to create and develop zero44. »

Heading up zero44 are managing directors and co-founders Friederike Hesse and Nils Obermann. In its current phase of product development, the company is focused on expanding its team and building relationships with its customers. Software for the wider market is expected to launch later this year.
