The Japanese Mao Saigo 9 strokes behind after the 3rd in the Evian C’ship

Japan’s Mao Saigo birdied six in the third round of the Evian Championship on Saturday, leaving her nine shots off the pace and finishing 15th in the fourth major women’s tournament of the year.

Saigo, 8-under 205 after a bogey-free 65, was ahead of compatriot and first-round leader Ayaka Furue, who had a par 71 that day at the Evian Resort Golf Club with three birdies , a bogey and a double bogey to finish 22nd.

Canada’s Brooke M. Henderson remained at the top of the standings after a 68, her 17 under 196 two shots ahead of South Korea’s Ryu So Yeon in second place.

From the back nine, Saigo sank a 6-yard putt on the No. 16 for his first birdie before getting another on the No. 17, following a superb second shot from 110 yards that landed near the spit.

“It was a boost of confidence that I was able to take the chances I created with my shots,” said Saigo, who added four more birdies to the front nine.

She revealed that she had lost a note with all the course details in the second round and took a few hours to rewrite it from scratch overnight, which came in handy.

“It was tough, but I’m glad I wrote it (again),” she said.

Yuna Nishimura had a 68 and Nasa Hataoka a 72 as they both placed 29th at 6 under.
